Many times we ask ourselves "what makes my life meaningful?" and "what actually is a meaningful life?" or "why am I here?what keeps me living?" After asking myself these questions i realised that everyone has their own meaning and understanding of what a good and meaningful life is, it is different for us all. Mostly depending on the things we believ, or were taught to believe. In order to know what makes my life meaningful i ask myself, "what do i care about?" "what is very important to me?" The answer to these questions make my, and possibly anyone elses life meaningful.
Things such as friends and family are very meaningful. They help us, watch us during good and bad times, and they are there for us nomatter what. Good times or bad, they won't leave. These people are around us constantly, which makes it easier for them to mean something to us, we see them so much we grow to know them and see the great things in them. We relate to them. A meaningful life doesnt mean you have to have materialistic things, that is the least important thing in our lives. It is only a way to show people we are there, and we demand the "spotlight". A meaningfull ife should contain things that make you happy , not things that people, t.v or movies make you belive will make you happy, such as corporate culture.. The things around us affect our views of a meaningful and happy life in a very big way.
When other people were asked about what makes their lives meaningful many said the same things. Family and friends ruled their lives. When asked, a young lady replied:"My family and friends are what make me, if they don't like what I'm doing it will hurt me badly, making me feel like their not gonna be there for me....that would make my life meaningless."
This shows us how people cherish those around them. For some, family and friends are a necessity, like food and water, they need them. Another agreed andsaid: " My friends and family will always be there for me and will always want the best foe me, what else can make me happy ?" It seems as though many believe that if there's families and friends are there folr them , then they must be important. Being important to atleast someone makes peoples lives meaningful.
Another thing that many of the older people have said make their lives meaningful is being wise. Being wise as in having experienced many things and learning from them. My mother said " I consider myself wise when it comes to certain things, these things help me not make the same decision over." Failing makes their lives meaningless, but learning from these mistakes makes their lives meaningful. This is beacuse they know they are goin in the right path to sucess.
Pop culture affects what we think is a good and meaningful life. Corporate culture is the dominant culture out of the three types. It is anything that makes money with selling things that affect the media, as well as someone who makes money by puring things into oru minds. As stehanie said " We pay them to wear their logos."
The major messages we get from corporate cultures have to do with more outer than internal things. Money, power, popularity, looks, and fame are only a couple of things that are put out to make our lives "meaningful." Corporate culture tells us that good looks is one of the main things that makes us or break us. In movies such as "Hottie or Nottie" we see this message being put out. The "nottie" doesn't have a social life, a boyfriend or anything that " makes her life meaningful" all beacuse she is considered unattractive. Once she goes through a makeover and becomes "hot" she gets all the attention she wanted ,finds a guy and falls in love. Making her life, based on corporate culture, meaningful.
Money is also a idea thought to make one's life meaningful. In many shows, such as "Gossip Girl" the upper class group re the ones who have everything they need 2 become fully happy. They have enought money to buy anything they want and desire.
During class we analyzed videos about what they tell us about having good and meaningful lives. Such as Lil Mama and her song " Lipgloss. " The reason behind being happy is being popular.
In order to become popular, you need money, good looks and expensive things. Getting praised by not only your classmates but also your authorities makes your life good. The video stresses that materialistic things are the way to go. They make people envy you and want to be just like you. The more praise of this sort that you get ,the better your life is."I just I want to be apart of the cool crowd, I just feel like I don't have what it takes" Lil mama starts of the video with this line. She is talking about not having the look to be in the popular crowd. This causes her to feel like she isn't worth much, hence making her life meaningless.
We studied holiday in class as well. Most holidays in our culture are influenced on the many things that are said to make our lives meaningful, such as materialistic things. Holidays have turned into selfish occasions in which we think about what will make us look good in front of others based on our physical appearance and how expensive the gifts we gave /received were.
Folk culture unlike corporate culture, are things we are taught by those close to us. These are the things that the people around us want us to believe, mostly in school and family. We see folk culture being taught as early as kindergarden. The kids are being taught to share with others, to help each other out. We also see folk messages in school songs and rhymes. These silly rhymes without knowing teach us what others believe will make our life good and meaningful. Our families might be one of the dominant suppliers of folk messages. They teach us things that have been passed down from their families many years ago. Folk culture is this, things passed on o others from many years behind. Something that many people follow but do not profit from, such as corporate messages, which are used to make money.

Folk culture Online Activity
The first folk culture advice that I read was " How to think of conversations to talk about with your boyfriend" these are "tips" on how to start fun and interesting conversations with your boyfriend so that you guys will never be bored or suffer through those "awkward silences." These 16 tips are pathetic. The teach us what we "need to" do in order to have a conversation with your boyfriend. Even though if you thing logically, having "awkward silences" with your boyfriend should really make you think about your relationship on a deeper level. Why be with someone who ur not comfortable with? The tips should help you start conversations with a guy you want to get to know and are attracted to. Maybe they will be helpful then. The fact that here "warning" girls about what to avoid doing to guys shows us how much folk culture focuses on how girls need to worry about how to be with guys, since it should come to guys easily, as folk culture wants us to believe.
The second was " How to be the perfect boyfriend /girlfriend" This video consisted on tips to being a good bf/gf. This was one seemed to be made to make us laugh at how people ,folk culture, expect us to act towards our significant other. The things they say are all about wat folk culture teaches us though. "Thinking of the other" before you think of yourself and "putting them first" seems to be one of the messages that are advised to us. These videos show us some ideas of what folk culture believes in the subject but not many. It gets confused with dominant corporate culture msg's on relationships.

President Obama
January 20, 2009. A very historic day. Today Barack Obama officially became the 44th president of the United States. Those who were lucky enough lined up through Pennsylvania Ave. while others tuned in from their t.v's. The inauguration was focused on how the lives of African Americans have changed through out history, and how different their lives will be from now on. Obama coming into presidency during this time must be very hard. Many people are expecting him to solve all the problems being thrown at us almost immediately. Others probably don't even see him capable of being able to handle such things.
Through Obama's we see many things that contribute to what people believe means to be living a good and meaningful life. He believed in change and making a difference, something that many people view as leading into a meaningful life. As well as, going through the right path. All of this made our lives meaningful as well. We were able to make that change that makes our lives meaningful. Those who voted were able to change the lives of the people in the present as well as the future.

Martin Luther King
On the 19th of January we were reminded of someone was and still is considered a hero and a great man. Martin Luther King Jr. Is known for many great things he has done. He wanted to make a difference in the world by making everyone equal. He didn't want anyone to be judged just by their color of their skin, and he had much to do with the civil rights movement. This day MLK day was very special, more than any others. The reason being that the next day Barack Obama became the first black president of the Unites States.
Since MLK was considered a hero, we never hear anything negative towards him. There are rumors about things he has done, such as cheat on his wife with prostitutes or things along those line, but people don't speak the truth, they believe since he's done so many good things, why ruin his "perfect "image with negativity.I don't believe though that this should change the way we see him. It actually shows us that he is human, and just like u, not a god dat we will never be like. Seeing his flaws helps us realize that maybe we can do great things like he has done.

Valentines Day
Valentines day represents a day in which we spend with the ones we love, mostly our significant other. On this day we cherish and show our love and care towards that significant other more than any other day during the year. Couples go out to eat, spend time together and give each other gifts. On this day you see so much of the color red, of hearts, and of Cupid, the main symbol of this day, around the city.
In our culture it seems as though the male is supposed to make the female happy. The way to that happiness, buying her expensive gifts. The expensive gifts will sure make her fall for you and let her know how much you truly love her, or that is what dominant corporate culture wants us to think. On this day the guy buys the girl flowers and chocolates and the girl is supposed think that that is the most romantic thing they could have done, when truthfully its just like a tradition that I would get tired of. It is very rare to find one of the messages on this day to be that girls should give to guys, that guys can receive gifts on this day as expensive as females should receive.
Corporate culture empathizes the idea of buying materialistic things for our significant other, such as diamonds. "Diamonds are a girls best friend" that lines is one of the most heard during Valentines day. Pretty much corporate culture is calling women shallow and self-absorbed, and they are telling males that the woman they are with will not be happy with them just for them, but also for how expensive and nice looking the gifts they give us are. Once again a holiday that should be about showing how much we care and love others was turned into one in which the materialistic aspect of it becomes primary.

Winter Break
Christmas has always been a special day for my family, aswell as for many others. It was always a day that we all waited for anxiously and with much anticipation.
My mom and aunt would make christmas most memorable for the kids, showing us that many families try to make the holidays great for the little ones. The day before Christmas Eve my mom would always help me bake cookies, write a letter and leave a can of Coca- Cola for "Santa Clause" it turned into something that my cousins and I shared and did togeather. Once Christmas Eve came the whole day would be spent cooking enought food for the whole family. At around 8 pm we would pack up all the gifts and head to my Aunts house. Once there the whole family would get togeather and celebrate until midnight. When the clock striked midnight we would finally eat then open up all our gifts, this tradition has stayed with my family for many years.
I noticed that the younger you are the more gifts you would receive. As a little girl I would get more than one gift from everyone in tha family. From Barbie doll, play houses, anything that I would be able to play with. Now that I'm older they still try to make christmas one of the best days of the year but the gifts have gones down.
This year during Christmas everyone did their best to try an make it like others, not only with the economic crisis but with other rising problems, my family tried to make the best of it. Once again it was spent at my Aunts house and presents were opened at midnight. Culture wise, i believe Christmas shows us how much we value materialistic things. Especially this year, the christmas spirit was not in the air. The economic crisis really brought down everyones spirit for this christmas. People werent really worried about the traditinal part of it, more about "what presents will we give?" "how expensive will they be?" and "will we even be able to give these thing out?" It really is sads to see that during a time in which we should think about Jesus and be grateful spending time with our familes, we think about how the materialistic things will negativtly affect our christmas experience.
Christmas shouldn't be this way, ofcourse everyone enjoys gettin a gift or two, but shouldn't we focuse on the traditions that were brought down to us? I don't think this would be a easy thing for many people to do, which is once again something sad to see.

Corporate culture essay draft
